Ibadat (Ibadah) meaning in English in Islam
Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim, Today’s topic of discussion is Ibadat (Ibadah) meaning in English in Islam.
Ibadat meaning
Ibadah is an Arabic word. Although it is an Arabic word, it is very familiar to all-speaking Muslims. This is a famous Islamic term. This word has been mentioned in the Qur’an 26 times in different ways.
The word Ibadat is the root of the word Abada; Which means obedience, slavery, slavery, humility, loyalty, obedience, etc. In Islamic terminology, worship is the name of following the Oneness of God. Whatever is done outside or against it will not be considered worship.
The Arabic word mabud is a verb-noun from the metal ibadat. This means the one who is worshiped. Hence the word Abd is used in the sense of a slave. Because what Abd does is worship. God Almighty is our Lord and we are His slaves.
The importance of ibadat
Allah Ta’ala has created us only to worship Him.
God the Almighty said,
I have created the jinn and mankind that they may serve Me. (Surat al-Jariyat: 56)
In this verse, we understand that Allah wants His creation, man and jinn, to abide by His Oneness, and not to associate partners with Him under any circumstances.
Note that all creation, except for a few parts of humans and jinns, worships Allah; Everyone is a Muslim, that is, everything obeys the Oneness of God.
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “We worship only You and ask for Your help.”
In this verse, Allah Ta’ala has taught us to worship only Him, that is, to follow His monotheism in all matters, and He has also taught us to seek only Him.
Allah the Almighty further said,
O mankind! Worship your Lord Who created you and those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious – see V. 2: 2).
Definition of Ibadah
Introducing worship, Shaykh al-Islam ibn Taymiyyah (SM) said:
Worship is obedience to the commandments given by Allah through the messengers. He further said that Allah loves and likes all public and secret deeds and words are called Ibadat.
Imam Qurtubi (RA) said,
Worship is the proclamation of the Oneness of God and following the rules of His religion, and the essence of worship is humility and self-denial.
Allama Ibn Kathir (RA) said,
The literal meaning of worship is flexibility. In the technical sense, Ibadat combines perfect fear, humility, and love.
Abul Ala Maududi (RA) said,
The essence of worship is to attain the supremacy of an entity, and then to lose one’s freedom before it. That is to accept his obedience.
We have learned about the definition of worship given by different sages. The simplest and most accurate definition is that Ibadat is the name of Tawheed, that is, the complete adherence to the Oneness of God. Therefore, to understand worship well, one must know Tawheed, that is, the Oneness of God. So first we need to know the identity of God well. The description of his name and attributes that he has taught us through the Qur’an and Sahih Hadith is the identity of Allah. That is where the full explanation of Tauhid exists. If you want to know about Tauhid, you can read my articles on Tauhid such as Tawheed Introduction, and Allah Identity.
Steps of ibadah
There are two stages of worship; in other words, worship is divided into two parts. The first and main part of it is faith. The other is Islam. Faith means faith in the heart. In the broadest sense, faith is the name given to firm belief in the heart of all that exists in Tauhid. And Islam is a combination of two things. And that is words and deeds. To speak is to bear witness to martyrdom or Tawheed and prophethood, that is, to testify that there is no god but Allah. And work means turning everything inside Tauhid into work. In particular, Salat, Siam, Zakat, and Hajj, these four things to follow the instructions well.
Therefore, we have come to understand that Ibadah is the name of believing in all aspects of Tauhid in the heart, acknowledging it orally, and putting it into action.
