Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim, Today’s topic of discussion is Attahiyatu Lillahi wa Salawatu (Tashahhud) full dua with English transliteration & meaning, Hadith of Attahiat, History of Attahiyat or Tashahud.
Tashahud or Attahiyat is not a surah. However, Narrated by Ibn Abbas (RA): The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to teach us Tashahhud just as he taught us the Quran’s Surahs. (Sahih Muslim: 788)
Attahiyat lillahi wa salawatu in Arabic

Attahiyyatu lillahi wa salawatu English meaning
All honor, all worship, and all sacred things are for Allah. O Prophet! May peace be upon you and Allah’s favors and blessings descend upon you. Peace be upon us and the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness to the fact that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
Bukhari 835, 6230, Muslim 402, Abu Dawud 968, Nasa’i 1298, Ibn Majah 899, Ahmad 4101, Mishkat 909.
Hadith of Attahiat or Tashahhud
On the authority of Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (RA):
He said, When we prayed with the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him), we used to recite this dua, “Assala-mu ala-Allah-hi Qabala Ibadihi, Assala-mu ala-Jibrila, Assala-mu ala-Mikayla, Assala-mu ala- Mu Ala-Fula-Nin” – (meaning – Peace be upon Allah before He sends upon His servants, Peace be upon Gabriel, Peace upon Mikael. Peace be upon So-and-so). When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) finished the prayer, he turned to us and said, “Do not say “Peace be upon Allah.” Because Allah is Salam (Peace Giver) Himself.
So one of you will sit in prayer and say, “Attahiyatu lilla-hi wassalawa-tu wattayyiba-tu assala-mu alayka aiyuhan nabiyyu warahmatullah-hi wabaraka-tuhu assala-mu alayna waala- iba-dillah-his sa-lihin” (meaning all honor, Worship, worship and holiness are for Allah. O Prophet! Peace be upon you and all the righteous servants of Allah). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said If a person says these words, his blessings will reach every righteous servant in the heavens and the earth.
Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Ashhadu Alla- ila-ha Illallahu wa ash hadu anna Muhammadan Abduhu wa Rasuluhu” – (meaning I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. I further bear witness that Muhammad is the servant of Allah). and Messenger). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, After that, the dua that pleases the servant of Allah, he will recite the dua and plead in the great court of Allah.

History of Attahiyyat or Tashahud
The Attahiyatu attainment in the Miraj night is a fabricated story. A famous saying in our society is that Rasulullah (SAW) attained Attahiyatu on Miraj Night. There is a story about this. The story summarizes that when the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) reached the highest proximity of the Almighty Allah on the night of Miraj, he addressed the Almighty Allah and said “التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَات” in response to the Almighty Allah said “السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ” May there be a portion of Salam for his Ummah as well.
That is why he said: “السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ” Then all the inhabitants of the sky including Jibraeel (as) said “أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ“ Some storytellers say the words were spoken by angels. It is not known that they have any basis. There is no such narration in any Hadith book with a chain of transmission. Some have mentioned it without a chain of transmission. All other hadith books including Sahih Al Bukhari and Sahih Muslim mention Tashahhud or Attahiyat. But nowhere does it say that it came from Meraj.
