What is the meaning of the name al Witr of Allah?

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim; Today’s topic of discussion is: What is the meaning of the name al Witr of Allah?

What is the meaning of the word witr?

Al-Witr is an attributive name of Allah. This name means the odd or unique. That is, Allah has no partner, no associate, no son, no likeness.

Narrated Ali (RA):

He said, “The Witr prayer is not an obligatory prayer like your obligatory prayers. Rather, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has made it an act of worship for you. He (the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)) said: Allah is the odd one, and He loves the Witr. O you who have received the Quran! Pray the Witr.”

Jame’ at-Tirmidhi 453

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him):

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Allah has ninety-nine names, meaning one less than one hundred; indeed, He is odd and He loves odd. Whoever memorizes these names will enter Paradise. They are:

Allah is the One, the One, the Eternal, the First, the Last, the Innermost, the Creator, the Ever-Sustaining, the Owner of the Truth, the Peaceful, the Believer, the Sustainer, the Almighty, the Almighty, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, the Most Subtle, the All-Knowing, the All-Knowing, the All-Knowing, the All-Knowing, the All-Sustainable, the All-Powerful, the All-Knowing, the All-Sustainable, the All-Powerful, the All-Knowing, the All-Wise, the All-Knowing, the All-Knowing, the All-Wise, the All-Wise, the All-Wise, the All-Rashid. The Most Gracious, the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

At-Tawwabu and Rabbu al-Majidu al-Waliyu ash-Shahid al-Mubinu al-Burhanu ar-Rafu ar-Rahim al-Mubdiu al-Muidu al-Baisu al-Warisu al-Qabiyu ash-Shadidu ad-Darru an-Nafiu al-Baqiu al-Wakiu al-Khafidu ar-Rafiu al-Qabidu al-Basitu al-Muizzu al-Muzilu al-Muksitu ar-Razzaqu dhu al-Quwwati al-Matin, al-Qaimu ad-Daimu al-Hafizu al-Wakilu al-Fatiru as-Samiu al-Mu’tiu al-Muhyiu al-Mumitu al-Maniu al-Jamiu al-Hadiu al-Kafiu al-Abdu al-Alimu as-Sadiqu an-Nuru Al-Muniru At-Tammu Al-Kadimu Al-Bitru.

He is One, He is without equal, He begets no one, nor is He begotten; and there is none like unto Him.

Zuhair (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “We have heard from several scholars that the names should begin as follows: (There is no god but Allah, He is One, He has no partner, His is the kingdom, His is all praise, in His hand is all goodness, He has full power over all things. There is no god but Allah, to Him belong the best names.)

Sunan Ibn Majah Hadith No. 3861

The name Al-Bitr contains a vast knowledge of the monotheism of Allah. The name Al-Bitr is not mentioned in the Quran; it is found in the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

May Allah grant us the ability to understand and act on matters correctly; Allahumma Amen.
