The words of the Quran
Allah says:
“O believers, do not ask questions in anyone’s house except your own until you ask permission and greet the people of the house. This is good for you so that you accept the admonition”. [Surah Noor, Verse: 27]
Allah Ta’ala also says,
“But when you enter a house, you shall greet yourselves, as a blessed and holy greeting from Allah.” [Surah Noor, Verse: 61]
Allah Ta’ala also says,
“And when you are greeted, give a better greeting than that. Or will give so in response”. [Surah Nisa, verse: 86]
Allah says:
“Has the record of Abraham’s honored guests come to you? When they came to him and said, Salam, he replied, Salam. They are strangers.” [Surah Zariat, verses: 25, 26]

Hadith No. 1
On the authority of Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-‘as Radiyallahu Anhuma, who said,
“A person asked the Messenger of God, O Messenger of God! What is the best practice in Islam? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Feed the people and greet everyone whom you know and whom you do not know.”

Hadith No. 2
On the authority of Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Allah Ta’ala Adam a. Who said after creation, go! Salutations to the congregation of angels who are sitting. Listen carefully to what they answer you. For what they will answer will be salutations to you and your descendants. Then Adam He went and said to the angels, “السلام عليكم ”, meaning ‘Peace be upon you,’ and they said, “السلام عليك ورحمة الله ‘Peace be upon you and the mercy of God”.

Hadith No. 3
On the authority of Abu Umarah al-Bara’ ibn Azeeb, may God be pleased with him, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed us in seven things: visiting the sick, participating in the funeral prayer, answering a sneeze, helping the weak, helping the oppressed, extending salam, freeing the swearer.”

Hadith No. 4
On the authority of Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“You will not enter Paradise until you become complete believers. And you will not be complete believers until you love one another. Shall I show you one thing by which you will love one another? Then he said, spread the salam more and more.

Hadith No. 5
On the authority of Abu Yusuf Abdullah ibn Salam Radiyallahu Anhu, he said,
“I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saying, O mankind! You extend salam, feed people, maintain kinship, and when people sleep, you pray. Then you will enter Paradise safely.
Tirmidhi: 2487; Ahmad 451/5; Ibn Majah: 1335, 3251; Darmi 340/1 The chain of the hadith is pure. Hakem has termed the hadith as sahih; P: 13/3 Imam al-Dahhabi agreed with him. Evidence of this hadith exists through the hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anhu from Hakem, p: 129/4.
Rules of Salam
It is mustahab for the one who greets him to say: That is, «السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته» “Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh” That is, peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you. It is Sunnah to use the word ‘your’ in the plural here. However, the one who salutes, is alone or one. This is good. And the one who answers the salam will say, “وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته” That is, peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you too. وعليكم will say while answering. Here will bring و [wow].
One – On the authority of Imran Ibn Husayn Radiyallahu ‘Anhu, he said,
“A man came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, “السلام عليكم” When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, answered his greeting, the man sat down. Then the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “Ten.” Then another person came and said, السلام عليكم ورحمة الله Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. After answering his greeting, the man sat down. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Twenty”. Then another person came and said, السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته Rasulullah (SAW) answered his greeting and said, “Thirty”.
Abu Dawud: 5195, Tirmidhi: 2690, the chain of the hadith is strong as stated by Hafez Ibn Hajar in Fathul Bari p: 5/11, and Imam Bukhari narrated the hadith on the authority of Abu Huraira RA in Adabul Mufarad.
Two – On the authority of Ayesha Radiyallahu ‘Anha, she said,
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to me, “This is it, Gabriel has greeted you.” Ayesha Radiyallahu ‘Anha’ said, I said, «وعليه السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته». “Peace and blessings be upon him.” This is how it is described in various narrations of Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. However, “وبركاته” has been omitted in some descriptions. However, there is no problem in either description. Because the extension of reliability is acceptable.

Three – On the authority of Anas Radiyallahu Anhu, he said,
“When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) spoke about something, he used to say it three times so that his words were clear. And when he came to a people, he would greet them three times”. (Saluting three times) applies when he is more of the people.
Bukhari 22/11, Tirmidhi: 2724.
Four – In the long hadith narrated by Miqdad Radiyallahu Anhu, he said,
“We used to keep her share of milk for the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). He would come at night and give salutations in such a way that no sleeping person would wake up, but those who were awake would hear his salutations. One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came among us and greeted us in the way he used to greet us.
Muslim: 2055.
Five – On the authority of Asma bint Yazid Radiyallahu ‘Anha, he said,
“One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was passing a group of women inside the mosque. He saluted them and beckoned with his hand”.
At-Tirmidhi: 2698, Abu-Dawood: 5204.
The meaning of this hadith is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) uttered both words and gestures. Abu-Dawood’s narration supports this meaning. Because, it says, “فسلم علينا” ‘He greets us’.
Six – On the authority of Abu Jurai al-Huzaimi Radiyallahu Anhu, he said,
“I came to the court of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, ‘عليك السلام يا رسول الله،, ‘Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, عليك السلام, do not say, because عليك السلام is the greeting of the dead”.
Abu-Dawood: 4084, Tirmidhi: 2722, Ahmad: 64/5 and the chain of the hadith is pure.
Is Salaam obligatory?
Salutation is Sunnah. Allah says:
“O believers, do not ask questions in anyone’s house except your own until you ask permission and greet the people of the house.” [Surah Noor, Verse: 27]

Is it obligatory to reply to Salam?
Answering salam is an obligatory Qifayah. If the person present is one, he should reply to the salutation. Because Allah Ta’ala says,
“And when you are greeted, give a better greeting than that. Or will give so in response”. [Surah Nisa, verse: 86]
Marfu hadith narrated by Ali Radiyallahu Anhu, said,
“When a congregation crosses, the salam of any one of them is sufficient, and the salam of any of the Majlis who responds to the salam is sufficient for all of them.” Abu Dawud Hadith No. 5210.
Is it permissible to greet by holding the feet?
Salam by holding the feet is not Shariah compliant. It is not a method of greeting. Salam is the rule of Islam. If it is said that salam is not done with feet and hands, but respect is done with feet and hands, it is not according to Islamic Shariah.
Can salam be given while eating?
Salam can be given or answered while eating. There are no such restrictions.
Can salam be given to non-Muslims?
Salam cannot be given to non-Muslims. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “Do not greet the Jews and the Christians first.” (Muslim, Mishkat Ha: 4635). But if they give salam, reply with ‘Waalaikum’. (Muttafaq Alaih, Mishkat Ha: 4637).
